Sourcery
The eighth son of an eighth son (and therefore a wizard), also had an eighth son. A wizard squared. A Sourcerer.This Sourcerer breezes into the Unseen University and starts trying to mold them into what he thinks wizards should be. Up against this strain on reality is Rincewind, assisted by a lady barbarian thief (who really jut wants to be a hairdresser) and a trainee barbarian hero with 3 days experience. (And the Luggage, and the Librarian).
The early discworld novels didn't have the same level of pathos/schmaltz that crept in later, and Rincewind manages to come across as a bit of a hero, while still staying true to his character.
