Child 44 (Leo Demidov, #1)

Child 44 (Leo Demidov, #1) - Tom Rob Smith A good page turner, set in Soviet Russia where the party is pushing the Communist ideal and claiming dropping crime rates.
The main character, a detective, suddenly realises this isn't the case after realising one person sentenced to death after a false confession is actually innocent.
Looking further into a murder that he'd told the family was just an unfortunate accident (as no one is murdered in the new system), he puts himself and his wife in peril.
Trying to stay one step ahead of the security forces closing in on him to find the killer makes him see the rot at the top and the willingness of normal citizens to help when he's no longer a part of that system.

Describes the conditions and hardships, as well as the pervading sense of paranoia drilled into everyone, where the biggest crime seems to be being seen as anti-state.
