Battle Royale
A near future novel, where an East Asian superstate sends groups of students off to battle until only one remains.The reason isn't given until near the end, but the novel focuses on the students from one class and how they feel about it, and how trust is broken down between friends.
There are a group of main characters, but the story looks at most of the students and the reasons for their behaviour. Some are only given a short look in, others drift in and out through different chapters.
Quite violent in places, it keeps you turning pages to see who will be next.
