The Cardinal's Blades

The Cardinal's Blades - Pierre Pevel Set in 17th century France, the time of the Musketeers. In this novel, Cardinal Richelieu isn't the token villain, and the main characters are an elite unit at his command, used to carry out the secret and deniable tasks to keep France safe.

On top of this, there are also dragons and some magic. The good thing is, it isn't rammed home as if to say "look how fantastic this is!", rather it's in the background and everyone just accepts it.

Very good swashbuckling novel, characters all have a past which is expanded on throughout the book. Lots of intrigue and plots within plots.

There's some quite heavy foreshadowing/history towards the end which means the big reveal doesn't come as a massive surprise, but overall a good read.
