Wolves of the Northern Rift
Steampunk novel set in a different world (I think).A magical rift has opened, allowing monsters and magic into a world of zeppelins and other assorted Victorian Sci Fi themes.
The king sets up a group of Inquisitors to find and stop the spread of magic.
Simon Whitlock is one of those inquisitors, along with his companion/sidekick Luthor Strong.
Called to investigate attacks by werewolves in a remote corner of the realm they come across more than they expected.
The story moves at a good pace, and Whitlock and Strong have a good rapport that comes across.
Their beliefs are called into question as they progress through the investigation.
It came across as a mixture of Sherlock Holmes and the Witch Hunter series by C.L. Werner (Warhammer Fantasy). Not terribly original but a good read for a commute.
