Mr. Midshipman Hornblower
More of a collection of short stories than a full blown novel. Although it acts as an introduction to the early career of Horatio Hornblower, it was apparently written as a prequel to the first book that had come out some years previously.
Horblower has plenty of adventures and meets the expectations thrust upon him, despite his own self-doubt.
Good characters and plenty going on.
